Idolatry

This is the adoption of anything else apart from God as of paramount importance. It is the utter disobedience to the First Commandment. Idolatry does not refer just to the adoption of and worship of carved images but refers also to those things that we regard as most important in our lives such as the love of money, love for relatives and so much else, as long as they are elevated to the position of absolute importance to the exclusion of all else.

It is that which we worship or dance around in worship with the thought of the Creator relegated far into the background. That which we worship is our idol and we subordinate everything else to it. All this shifts the spiritual focus away from that which should matter the most. Our volitions bind us to that idol, eliminating the possibility of lifting our spiritual gazes higher.

If we consider God as of paramount importance in our lives, then we are bound to Him and on our earthly death we would be lifted up to heights which will make it possible to always absorb of His Power. On the other hand, if we indulge in idolatry, we become earthbound with no possibility of escape until we recognize the utter futility of our actions. This recognition may take centuries making us lose valuable time and thereby running the risk of eternal death.
